My Nephew Has Filed for Sole Custody of the Living Room
He’s eleven months old, speaks fluent mischief, and has already negotiated a non-disclosure agreement with the dog.
Eleven months. Thatâs the age when babies stop being adorable little blobs and start operating as tiny, unlicensed private investigators with a vendetta against floor polish.
Yesterday, I witnessed him hold the TV remote like it was a prop from Successionâall gravitas, zero user manual. He tapped volume up, and suddenly we were trapped in a telenovela dub of our own lives. The TV shrieked, the dog sighed, and my nephew gave me a look that said, 'We both know this was inevitable.'
Then came the water bowl incident.
He approached the dogâs bowl like it was the Holy Grailâand he was Indiana Jones, if Indy wore footie pajamas and had zero regard for sacred geometry. He paused. Made eye contact. Nodded once. And thenâdunk. Full-fist submersion. Followed by a slow, ceremonial shake over the rug, baptizing it into a soggy, slightly pee-scented covenant.
âHeâs not crawling,â I told my sister.
âHeâs scouting.â
His mobility is less âtoddler locomotionâ and more âSWAT team reconnaissanceâ. Turn your back? Thump-thump-thump. Thatâs not knees on hardwoodâthatâs the sound of imminent property damage.
And his word of choice? Dada. But only in felony-adjacent contexts:
- Dada! (as he hurls a diaper into the fireplace like itâs a ceremonial offering)
- Dada! (while chewing a Lego brick like itâs artisanal jerky)
- Dada! (while attempting to negotiate collective bargaining rights with the Roombaâcomplete with finger-pointing and sustained eye contact)
Iâve hidden all remotes. Locked the spice cabinet (heâs suspiciously drawn to cayenne). And yesâI did draft a restraining order. Itâs currently pinned to the fridge with a banana-shaped magnet.
He hasnât signed it yet.
But he did lick it.
Which, in toddler law, counts as consent.
P.S. If you see a baby wearing sunglasses indoors, running toward your Wi-Fi routerârun. Not away. Toward. You might still save the password.
