The Kettle Incident: A Love Story in Three Noodles
She was brilliant, gorgeous, and once turned a kettle into a noodle cannon during finals week.
Let me tell you about my college girlfriend—brilliant, gorgeous, and utterly incapable of boiling water without turning it into a federal case.
One night, mid-finals week, she decided we needed “homemade ramen to fuel our brains.”
Very romantic. Very Pinterest.
Until she filled the kettle with tap water… and then added the dry noodles directly into the kettle.
Not a pot. The kettle.
The one you make tea in.
I watched in real time as the noodles expanded like a styrofoam brick.
They clogged the spout.
She tried to pour it.
Nothing came out, so she shook it.
Hard.
The lid popped off.
Noodles launched across the dorm kitchen like fleshy shrapnel.
One landed in my hoodie. One stuck to the ceiling. One hit our RA in the back of the head as he walked past.
He didn’t even ask.
He just said, “Again?” and walked away.
We ate cold cereal for dinner.
She captioned the photo “Artisanal Noodle Sculpture // Mid-Century Chaos.”
We broke up two weeks later.
The kettle never recovered. 🍜🎓
Fun fact: She now runs a food safety nonprofit. I’m not kidding. Her TED Talk is titled “How Not to Boil Water (And Why It Matters).”
